MPOJC assists Metro Area communities (Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Tiffin, University Heights, and contiguous portions of Johnson County) with bicycle planning and mapping. The list below includes links to bicycle resources that can be viewed online or downloaded and printed. Printed copies of the 2021 Iowa City Metro Area Trails Map are available at local libraries, recreation facilities, and bicycle retailers.
On June 15, 2022 the MPO hosted a virtual Lunch and Learn focused on transportation solutions for commuters who live too far from work to bike, walk or use local bus service.
FACT: Nearly 40,000 workers employed in Johnson County commute in from other counties and over 22,000 workers who live in Johnson County travel out of the county for work every day. Rising gas prices are a special challenge for these workers.
View our “Easy on the Gas” discussion with Michelle Ribble Commuter Programs Manager for the University of Iowa and Brock Grenis, Transit Planner from the Eastern Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG)* to learn about a range smart programs and incentives to suit almost any commuter need, including carpool, vanpool, rideshare, express bus service, and rural dial-a-ride. These programs serve residents of Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, and Washington counties as well as other areas depending on employment.
The zoom discussion focuses on existing and future on and off-street bicycle facilities and other improvements to make bicycling safer and more convenient.

Trail usage up during COVID-19
The value of the trail network has never been more apparent than during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when residents took to the outdoors for recreation, fitness, and safe social interaction. With so many activities and indoor facilities closed, trail usage surged throughout the Metro Area. Trail counts were taken during Spring 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic when many facilities had just closed, and again in the late Summer and early Fall. These charts document increased in trail usage.
Trails to Table Zoom Video Series
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County and the communities of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, University Heights, and Johnson County worked together to promote use of our trail network through the winter months. As part of that effort, we produced a Zoom video series exploring the trail network and providing tips of for enjoying yourself and keeping warm outdoors in all kinds of weather. Please enjoy the videos below.
